Crash on ‘dead man’s curve’ kills three, injures one

ST. LUCIE COUNTY, FL — Two cars collided head-on near the Okeechobee-St. Lucie County line this afternoon, killing two people and injuring two others, including a child.

originalThe accident happened on SR-70 along a sharp bend in the road known as “dead man’s curve.”

A red and a silver sedan are twisted together in the middle of the road.  State troopers say it’s unclear what caused the wreck, but say the two cars were the only ones involved.

The Florida Highway Patrol has not released names of the victims.  FHP says a father and his 4-year old son were driving in the silver sedan.  The father was killed upon impact.  His son was airlifted to St. Mary’s Medical Center.

“That was my best friend in that car,” said Justin Howard, age 23.  Howard says a caravan of four cars, including the silver sedan, were all headed to the beach in Ft. Pierce when the crash happened.

Ironically, Howard says he’s in town from Tennessee to attend the funeral of another friend who was killed in a car wreck in Okeechobee last weekend.

State troopers say a passenger in the red sedan was also killed in the wreck.  The driver of the red sedan was airlifted to Holmes Regional Medical Center in Melbourne for trauma care.

FHP has shut down SR-70 between Okeechobee and St. Lucie Counties.
