SANTA MARIA — Police responding to a possible hit-and-run Saturday found the partially decapitated body of an elderly man on a sidewalk in Santa Maria.
48421781 The officers realized they were dealing with a homicide rather than a hit-and-run when they found the body of 69 year old Frederick Holgate, along with an axe several feet away.

Police have arrested 20 year old Nicholas Bendle in connection with the killing.

Resident David Drazdik said he came across Holgate’s body moments before police arrived. He saw Holgate on the sidewalk and went to help him, but discovered that his head had been severed off on the right-hand side.

Santa Maria is about 130 miles northwest of Los Angeles.

Authorities says a motorist using fake police lights to get through traffic was busted after an off-duty Manatee County deputy spotted the car and became suspicious.

Detective Jeff Lane reported that he was driving south on Interstate 75 on July 18 when he saw the lights behind him and pulled over. When he saw that the passing car was a black BMW with no police markings, Lane became suspicious and wrote down the license plate number.

The sheriff’s office reports that Lane connected the vehicle to 34-year-old Dennis Woodruff. The detective went to the Publix where the Sarasota man worked Tuesday, and authorities say Woodruff admitted using the lights.

Woodruff was arrested and charged with impersonating an officer. He was released Wednesday on $1,120 bail.

Three Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, police officers were killed Saturday morning while responding to a call about a domestic dispute, Police Chief Nathan Harper said.

The suspect was taken into custody after negotiations with law enforcement.

Richard Poplawski was wearing a bulletproof vest when he opened fire on Officers Paul Sciullo III and Stephen Mayhle in the doorway of his Stanton Heights home at about 7 a.m., Harper said.

Officer Eric Kelly, who rushed to the scene on his way home after finishing his shift, was fatally shot as he attempted to assist his fallen colleagues, Harper said.

The shootings led to a standoff outside the home lasting nearly four hours, in which two more officers were injured, Harper said.

Poplawski, who was armed with an AK-47 and a .22-caliber long rifle, fired about 100 rounds during the standoff, Harper said.

Harper described the incident as the most deadly in the force’s recent history.

“We have never had to lose three officers in the line of duty at one time,” Harper said. “The last time we had an officer fatally injured was in 1995.”

Poplawski was taken into custody after surrendering to law enforcement. He is expected to face charges of homicide, aggravated assault and other related offenses.

His mother was inside the house at the time, Harper said.

The suspect was taken to a hospital, and Harper said he didn’t know the extent of his injuries.

Police make arrest in hit and run death of wheelchair-bound man

DANIA BEACH, Fla. (WSVN) — Police have announced an arrest in a hit and run that took the life of a man in a wheelchair over the weekend.

Police detained 34-year-old Hugo Daniel Detteren, a man who had been convicted of reckless driving in past, after he admitted to killing 57-year-old Kenneth Scotto, who died at scene of the crash in Dania Beach Sunday.

Police went to Detteren’s Hollywood home early Tuesday morning after witnesses called Broward Crimestoppers following media reports of the hit and run.

Detteren was on probation for a reckless driving conviction. Police said he quickly admitted to his involvement in the crash. “The suspect, upon exiting his residence, came out and spontaneously admitted to being involved in the crash,” said Broward Sheriff’s Office Sgt. Larry Akers at a press conference. “Our detectives then met with the suspect, took him into custody and did a follow-up interview, which at that time, he confessed to being totally involved in that accident.”

The accident occurred just after 6:30 p.m. Sunday, at the 900 Block of South Federal Highway. They found Scotto lying in the southbound inside lane of the roadway and his mangled wheelchair on the sidewalk.

According to witnesses, they observed Scotto crossing in the wheelchair from east to west across Federal Highway when a red, 2005 Ford Explorer Sport Trac drove southbound and kept going after striking Scotto dead.

Police have now impounded that pickup, which belonged to Detteren. Investigators noticed front, right damage consistent with the crash.

Brenda Ortiz, Scotto’s girlfriend, wanted to express her gratitude to whoever turned Detteren in to the authorities. “I want to meet that person and give them a big hug and thank them from the bottom of my heart,” she said after hearing the news, “because I have closure. Even though he’s dead, I have closure.”

Police have charged Detteren with leaving the scene of an accident with a fatality. He is in the Fort Lauderdale jail, held on $8500 bond.
